Hi, this is Deon de Wet.
In the next four videos, we talk about the four building blocks that make up the foundation of the deonThai METHOD of Thai Yoga Massage. We talk about how they can be used in everyday life as well as how they apply to skillful practice of the Thai Yoga Therapy System. Enjoy.
When we teach, obviously there’s got to be a lot of focus on technique and the doingness of the stuff, like how to make it really work and a worthwhile experience for somebody who’s on the receiving end of it. And of course, also, that the giver is doing it in a way that’s actually good for them and not somehow damaging or debilitating or something. So, there’s a lot of physical dos and don’ts involved but something that I find very important is what is the underlying intention and what is some of the attitudinal things that we use in our approach to this style of healing body work.
And something that I find very helpful is this idea of the Brahma-Viharas. Brahma is a Sanskrit word for divine or godly or god in a very broad sense of the word. And then Vihara is like an attitude or more literally translated like an abode. It’s like a place where you live. So it’s this divine sense of or state of being or attitude or approach to things. And you find these things referred to quite a lot in Buddhism.
And a lot of people know from Thai massage, that one of these things, metta, M-E-T-T-A, is something that translates quite often as loving kindness. So people will say that Thai massage is a practical application of loving kindness. That’s the one that most people are aware of because they’ll sign the emails with stuff like, “With metta,” or “Metta,” You see that a lot in Thai massage. So that got me interested in where does this come from and what other Brahma-Viharas are there because there’s a total of four of them. So I try to define them in a way that might be a little bit unusual but I like to bring them into use and show how they have application both on the mat and also off the mat. Which I think is always a good idea to get the broader perspective and then how do you apply this on a more immediate practical level.
